You never know how important it is to have good mentorship until you have one. When I just joined Skychute, I was unconfident about my technical skills as I only had 1 year of industry experience. However, my direct leader and lead engineer has been incredibly supportive. When I just got on boarded, they held quality technical workshops for me; When I get assigned with a new task they would help me get started, then leave me with space to tackle the challenges on my own, but they always keep an eye on me and reach out to help me with inspiring guidance; They even arranged a chance for me to deliver a tech talk which I never imagined before; They celebrate every little milestone for me. The growth I have here is real.
Skychute is a place where everyone is constantly learning something new and practicing professional work ethic all the time. You can hardly feel the vibe of the hierarchy of employer and employees as they all stay humble and genuinely have one common goal in mind: to create the best products for our customers. People often post the book they read or the talk they watch in the channel, and contribute to the open-source community and offline technical community. You can feel that getting better is a mindset of theirs. Being surrounded by these people, it’s hard to not want to be a better self and keep up with them.
Working with professional people doesn’t mean I’m working with inhumane work machines at all. People care for each other’s life but there is never a single moment when I feel uncomfortable or the line is crossed. Every Friday there is a demo session. It’s called the weekly demo but it’s more like a showcase and celebration as people just cheer for each other and catch up with their weekly highlights. After each Friday demo it’s the team time when we play board games, video games, cook, watch TV shows, or simply grab booze and chat. Covid-19 has forced us to have some distance from each other but the professionalism and the team bonding are still carried on, and I feel it’s even better than the time before the lockdown.
Being located at Custom House Hub near Darling Harbour, the view and the working environment are absolutely amazing. What I like the most are the cafe, public kitchen, and the pleasant scent of tea that refresh me every day I walk into the building. Work-life balance has become something you don’t need to struggle with. People at Skychute are pretty considerate and understanding. They told me that our mental and physical health come first, then everything else. The more freedom I have, the more I want to dedicate to my job. I’m grateful that I joined Skychute.
